Augmented Reality (AR) is a technology that digitally overlays text, images, videos, and even 2D/3D graphics and animations over physical objects in your view. Through computer vision, or other input mechanisms - it is possible to interact with those virtual objects.

When viewing Virtual Reality, the user is cut off from the physical environment around him. With Augmented Reality, the user's view is not replaced, but in-fact enhanced by additional objects and information.

A device based AR application uses only the local device to process the visual (or other) inputs for analysis and subsequent actions. A cloud based application sends the data to a server that will then analyze it further and provide instructions for subsequent actions.

Marker based AR activates a response in the application when the device views a physical (or virtually displayed) marker. Markers can be custom designed, but generally are made so that they are easily recognizable by the application. Markerless based AR applications use geolocation to anchor virtual objects. You can also use this technology to "place" virtual furniture in your living room and walk around it to see it from different angles.
